There are many Big Island activities for families that make this Hawaiian island the perfect family vacation destination, with activities for the entire family to enjoy. From relaxing beaches to hiking volcanoes, the Big Island offers a little bit of everything. Planning a family vacation can be difficult but no need to worry, we have created a list of our favorite “family-friendly” activities.
1. Aloha Adventure Farms
Located on the Big Island of Hawaii, Aloha Adventure Farms offers an exciting and unique family-friendly tour. There are two tours you can choose from, the first being one of the best Big Island ATV Tour which takes you through the jungles of Hawaii where you will have a chance to learn about different Polynesian islands such as Tonga, Fiji, and Samoa, and of course Hawaii. The second tour option includes a wood carving experience like no other, you will work with a second-generation woodcarver to create your own wood carving. Within this Polynesian Wood Carving Tour, you will learn what it is like to grow up on the island of Tonga. These tours fill up quickly so be sure to book your spot before it’s full. Aloha Adventure Farms is located off of Mamalahoa Highway in Holualoa.
2. Manta Ray Night Dive
Looking for an experience exclusive to the Big Island of Hawaii? Look no further. Manta Ray diving is one of the most unique activities you will find. This experience allows you to get in the water with some of the most majestic creatures on the planet, get up close and watch as they soar through the water. You are sure to be surprised by the sheer size of these animals. There are many companies that offer this experience through either snorkeling or scuba diving. While on this tour you will be taught about what makes manta rays so special and what to do while in the water. These tours are located on the Kona side of the island.
3. Waterfalls
One of the most well-known activities on the Big Island of Hawaii is the beautiful waterfalls, There are two waterfalls that we recommend you see while you visit, Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls. Both of these waterfalls are located on the Hilo side so be prepared for a drive (if you are staying on the Kona side). Akaka Falls is one the tallest waterfalls you can see on the big island, with easy access. Here you are able to walk on a guided path through the lush jungles where you will view the waterfall. The cost is $5 per person but it is definitely worth it.
4. Volcano National Park
Volcano National Park, located on the south side of the island, possesses several unique Big Island activities for families. The park is home to the island’s largest active volcano and many sight-seeing hikes. If you visit the park at night you can see the glow emitted from the lava within the active volcano, this is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. There is a fee to get into the park but with so much to do, we highly recommend it. Be sure to bring good shoes as the terrain is rough and you will be hiking.
5. Hapuna Beach
Hapuna Beach state park is home to one of the most well-known beaches on the island, located on the northwest side of the island it’s a must-see. This beach often ranks among the best beaches around the world, with its soft white sand and shallow waters it’s easy to see why. The beach offers fun for the entire family. But be sure to arrive early in the morning because spots fill up quickly.
6. Waipio Valley
Waipio Valley is located in Honoka’a. The valley is one of the prettiest spots on the island, you are able to park your car and take a short walk over the lookout point. From the lookout point, you are able to see the mile-long stretch of black sand. This spot is a great place for pictures of the valley from up high. Unfortunately, you are not able to drive or hike down to the valley; it is now closed to everyone but the landowners.
7. Black Sand Beach
The black sand beach is located on the southeast side of the island. The sand is black due to the volcanic activity on the island, here you will be able to see the green sea turtles. But be sure not to touch them as they are protected and it is against the law to do so. There are picnic tables and restrooms here at the beach which makes it a nice spot to have a picnic and hang out.
These are just some of the fun Big Island activities for families we have here. Keep in mind these activities are on all different sides of the island and will take time to drive to each location. We hope that you choose to come to the Big Island of Hawaii on your next family vacation and we hope to see you here soon at Aloha Adventure Farms.
